Think outside the box to create a thoughtful corporate culture

You don’t create a thoughtful corporate culture by accident, says Sarah Jones, co-owner of Bamboo Realty. Instead of creating a vision statement, agents at Bamboo Realty got together at a party where they cut and pasted images from magazines onto “vision boards.” They each made a collage for themselves, and collaborated on one for the company. The company’s vision board was framed and hangs in its office.

Bamboo Realty found its niche, landed in a national advisory program

Instilling a cohesive corporate culture can be a struggle for many entrepreneurs. But Sarah Jones had to find a way to create a culture for her residential real estate services company with multiple agents working virtually and without a central office.

“Many real estate agents are lone wolves, and they are perfectly comfortable being that way,” said Jones, managing broker of Bamboo Realty Inc. “But we created more of a team environment, where our agents have to feel comfortable sharing their experiences with the rest of the team.”

Although Bamboo Realty, which specializes in matching clients with apartments, condominiums or townhomes for lease and assisting first-time homebuyers with purchases, just opened its first office late this summer, the company has been operating with a virtual model since its inception in 2009. Making the corporate culture even tougher to bring together was the fact that Bamboo has 12 agents working in Houston and eight in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

But Jones was diligent in seeking out tools that would help the company operate cohesively and create a team-based environment that is often lacking in real estate companies, where agents tend to be out in the field most of the day and rarely interact with each other.

Foreclosures Drop in Houston

Houston real estate agent Jay Bradley has been selling homes for ten years, but he says the current Houston housing market is the best he's ever seen. The reason?  An improving economy.

"For example, last year, we had over 70,000 jobs that were added, which I say helps out. You've got a lot more people that are employed here than other areas of the country, therefore you've got more people can afford to live in their homes and stay in their homes and, which is great for our business, purchase new homes."
